A Summer Boost with Scholars
I’ll bet when the ball dropped at midnight on January 1, 2020, you wouldn’t have guessed in 1,000 years that your life would unfold the way it has since then. No, we had goals. We had plans. Vacations, appointments, races; we were going places and doing things, until the global pandemic caused by COVID-19 swept through our lives and turned us all on our heads.
And one of the biggest challenges has been children out of school. I know so many mothers who have assumed the role of ‘Educator’ on top of everything else and have major concerns about falling behind and how this will impact their child’s development, both academically and socially. Aspen, my oldest, only being in preschool certainly makes this less of a concern in our home, and thankfully we were fortunate enough to get into a neighbourhood preschool program in late May. I couldn’t believe the changes I noticed in him after having the chance to learn, grow and play in an environment structured around his development and learning needs. As parents, we are doing our best, wearing so many hats and often catering to the needs of multiple children, so is it any wonder that our little ones flourish when they have some undivided attention from a professional educator helping to guide and nourish their growing brains?
I have been fortunate enough to have had a chance to engage with the team at Scholars Education Centre, located within Park Royal South in West Vancouver, and they have some really wonderful Summer Boost Camps coming up specifically designed to remove the burden of being an educator from parents and ensure that children are going back to school in the Fall prepared as though they haven’t missed a beat.
Camps begin June 29th and run for 2 weeks in either AM (9:00-11:30) or PM (12:30-3:00) 2.5 hour blocks for a total of 25 hours. The program is suitable for all ages, all grades and all subjects - from as early as children preparing to enter Kindergarten with their Reading Readiness program, all the way to supporting students through their high school courses. Summer Camps combine customized academic programs with hands-on maker skills through their partnership with Steamoji.
Scholars Education Centres have a long-standing track record of preparing Canadian students not only to excel within provincial curriculums, but also giving them a keen sense of how our technological world requires an aptitude in new areas in STEM and the digital arts, which I particularly love as someone who identifies as a Creative and wants to support creative education for my children. The effects of their tutoring programs are measurable: after 40 hours of tutoring, students, on average, see a 1.59 grade level increase in reading, a 2.08 grade level increase in math, and a 3.16 grade level increase in writing. Incredible! And while yes, these increases reflect a greater understanding of the material, they also underpin a sense of confidence which will follow children throughout their academic journey and development.
Beginning next week (June 29th) and running through September, these Summer Boost Camps are an invaluable experience for children after having missed so much class time this past school year. And if you’re still unsure if this is the right fit for your family, both Scholars and Steamoji Maker Spaces offers free trials and assessments to pinpoint and give you an idea of exactly how they can help.
